Why is Tire Rotation Important?

Mechanic with Tires

As a vehicle owner, you may have often wondered, why is tire rotation important? In short, it significantly extends your tires’ lifespan, and saves you money in the long run. What does rotating your tires do? Rotating your tires helps to slow down wear of a single tire, ensuring each tire wears down at the same rate. To learn more about why rotate tires on your vehicle, check out these great tips from the service professionals at Voss Hyundai in Centerville. If you have any additional questions about what rotating your tires does, feel free to contact us anytime!

Does Tire Rotation Vary by Drivetrain?

The type of drivetrain, whether FWD, RWD, 4WD, or AWD greatly affects the rate at which your tires wear. When you turn corners, brake, or accelerate, all four tires experience a different level of friction depending where on the vehicle they are located.

  • Front-wheel drive vehicle: In front-wheel drive vehicles, engine power is sent directly to the front wheels, which also experience wear from steering and stopping. In this case, the front wheels will experience wear more rapidly.
  • Rear-wheel drive vehicle: In a RWD vehicle, the power from the engine is directed to the back wheels, but will not wear out as quickly as a FWD vehicle, as the front wheels still experience wear from turning. However, the back wheels on rear-wheel drive vehicles will still experience wear quicker than the front.
  • All-wheel drive vehicle (link to AWD blog or inventory page): On all-wheel drive vehicles, the engine’s force is more evenly distributed due to the differentials located throughout the vehicle, powering each wheel independently. Although, many respected mechanics in the industry agree that the back wheels will still wear quicker than the front.
  • Intelligent all-wheel drive systems: Intelligent all-wheel drive systems direct power to the lead wheel turning, reducing wear and allowing the vehicle to corner more easily.

When Should You Rotate Your Tires?

It is recommended that your tires should be rotated every six months or 5,000-8,000 miles. However, depending on which Hyundai vehicle you own, this interval could vary. We recommend consulting your owner’s manual to make sure you schedule the correct service intervals. However, if you’re not sure about the last time your tires were rotated, come visit our expert technicians to provide you with more information on how to maintain your vehicle.

What if I Don’t Rotate My Tires?

Without regular tire rotation, your tires will experience increased wear and tear. This could result in bald tires or other issues that could put you in a dangerous situation such as:

  • Blowouts and flat tires
  • Increase brake pad wear
  • Skidding due to poor traction
